This was certainly a challenging project, on many levels…
Paul Cooper, CEO of the Technique Group, decided that as the company had recently re-branded, he would like the new logo to be prominently displayed on his Leeds headquarters.
On the face of it, quite a reasonable request.
However, as the building is predominantly glass and aluminium profile, fitting the sign was problematic.
The logo being simply a red “V” pointing left to right, the desired effect was for it to appear to be “floating” on the face of the building.
Being situated on one of the highest points of the city, we had to be confident that the sign would be secure from wind resistance, whilst keeping the method of fixing as subtle as possible.
To complicate matters more, the sign was to be suspended between two projecting parts of the building, literally floating in mid air.
As Paul wanted a sign that could “be seen from the White Rose Centre”, the L.E.D. illumination had to be as bright as possible, without causing a distraction to office staff.
Working with our partners HW Signs, Andy Armitage proposed that we should construct the logo from polished stainless steel, with a translucent red face, and a red powder-coated solid rear to the logo, in order for the sign to be attractive when seen from within the offices.
As with many projects where the results are open to interpretation, we anticipated the client’s response with some anxiety.
Curiosity, alongside my masochistic tendencies, persuaded me to take a 20 mile detour on my way home, to view the finished product for myself, as darkness descended over god’s own county once again.
I shouldn’t have worried. As I ascended Millshaw from the ring road, a brilliant red “V” appeared before me, like a UFO.
My only concern was for incoming aircraft, as our red creation may tempt Manchester bound flights, to head fore Leeds/Bradford airport instead……
